EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables you to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy you can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma.
When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound. If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. EMDR therapy demonstrates that a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes. The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. “Am I broken?” “Am I never going to be the same again?” These are some of the questions that clients have asked me when they were suffering with PTSD Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD can catch you off guard. It can happen when you least expect it.
It may surprise you that paramedics are more at risk of PTSD than soldiers. You may have received your intensive training, you think you have seen it all and then something triggers a response in you and you feel like you spiral out of control with a feeling of being powerless.
The same can be true of the police, control room operators, firefighters, doctors or nurses. Also victims of rape or sexual abuse can carry on for years saying that they are over it and they have coped and dealt with it, only to find that it can resurface.
We all have ups and downs in our lives but sometimes something happens out of the blue and you feel that you are just unable to cope with it.
Our logical brains need to understand why or how something has happened. That’s why when we see a car crash on the motorway we have to discuss how it happened. This allows your brain to process it. Once your brain has processed it, it then moves on and forgets it.
When you fell over as a child you would run to your mum and she would ask what happened? You would tell her. She would soothe you and kiss your knee and make it better and then you would run and play again. Your brain processed it.
But when we cannot process something because our brains just cannot believe it or cannot understand it this is when we get thoughts going over and over in our brains. Like a cracked record, until you feel like you are never going to get over it.
This is where hypnotherapy can help you. By using hypnotherapy it can shift these thoughts and put them where they belong, in the past.
It’s like having a sticky plaster you have put over the wound (trauma). Over the years it gets frayed. You may lift it up now and then and look at the wound. You may even take the plaster off for a while and then put on a fresh one, leaving the infection there.
What we do with hypnotherapy is we work in a safe, secure and totally confidential environment. We remove the plaster, dig out the infection and allow you to heal once and for all.
Taking antidepressants for PTSD is like the sticky plaster it masks the hurt, guilt, trauma and pain. But when you stop taking them the wound it still there.
Hypnotherapy will not delete the memory but it files it in the right place and removes the fear and anxiety attached to it helping you to move on in your life and feel fantastic.
